Bill Smith

Trial Lawyer

William L. “Bill” Smith is an Idaho trial lawyer and founding partner of Smith Horras, P.A. His practice focuses on representing people and families in serious personal injury, catastrophic injury, commercial transportation, wrongful death, and complex civil cases throughout Idaho. Bill was born in Twin Falls and raised in Kimberly, Idaho. He graduated from the University of Idaho and earned his law degree from the University of Idaho College of Law in 1999. After law school, he clerked for Idaho District Judge J. William “Bill” Hart in Idaho’s Fifth Judicial District. The clerkship gave Bill an early opportunity to observe trials, hearings, lawyers, judges, and juries from inside the courthouse and helped shape his approach to litigation. Bill entered private practice in 2000. His early career included a broad range of civil litigation, including complex commercial, construction, and real-estate disputes. In 2007, he founded Smith Horras, P.A. The firm has since evolved into a plaintiffs’ practice focused on representing people injured through the conduct of others. At the center of Bill’s practice is trial work. He has served as lead counsel in five civil jury trials and has substantial additional bench-trial experience. His jury trial record includes a $980,000 verdict arising from a low-speed motor-vehicle collision involving disputed injuries and damages, as well as a significant verdict and judgment in an injury case arising on Interstate 84 in Jerome County, I

ABOUT
I am an Idaho trial lawyer and founding partner of Smith Horras, P.A. I represent people and families in serious personal injury, catastrophic injury, commercial transportation, wrongful death, and complex civil cases.I was born in Twin Falls, raised in Kimberly, and graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law in 1999. After law school, I clerked for Idaho District Judge J. William “Bill” Hart and was admitted to the Idaho State Bar in 2000. I founded Smith Horras in 2007.I think of trial advocacy as a craft—something that requires preparation, curiosity, repetition, judgment, and constant study. I have served as lead counsel in five civil jury trials and tried additional cases to judges. My trial work includes a $980,000 jury verdict arising from a low-speed motor-vehicle collision and a significant I-84 injury verdict and judgment obtained with my partner Joe Horras. I have also handled appeals and argued before the Idaho Supreme Court.I regularly study and teach trial advocacy and have presented for Trial Lawyers University, the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association, and ABA TECHSHOW. I have also had the opportunity to work successfully with nationally recognized trial lawyers on significant cases. After more than 25 years practicing law in Idaho, my goal remains simple: keep becoming a better trial lawyer, take on difficult cases, and be prepared when a client needs someone willing and able to try the case.
